i can't lie no more, i can't hide no more, got to be true to myself. and it feels like i am just too close to love you, so i'll be on my way. you gave me more than i can return, yet there's so much that you deserve.
ben was almost surprised at how easily max seemed to take his words for true. a part of him was relieved, but the other part of him wanted her to at least do a little yelling. it seemed strange for her to put so much trust in someone who was essentially a stranger. as much as ben wanted to say something to her for trusting him like that, it was neither his place or entirely appropriate considering the situation. not to mention, it was incredibly weird for ben to feel so protective over someone he'd only known for a day. ben figured he'd already given her enough of a scare for one morning. seeing as how she didn't think he was a creep, it was best to keep it that way. a shudder ran down his spine to think about what could have happened if ben hadn't seen her. he had been so close to leaving. just another minute or two, and ben would have walked out of that club, got drunk somewhere else. then, he would have woken up the next morning and started to push the memory of ever meeting max somewhere deep in the back of his mind.
it was a long shot, trying to patch things up. ben was almost surprised when the grin broke out on her face. however, the smile on her face was infectious and ben found himself smiling along with her. "something less lethal would be nice," he laughed softly and nodded in agreement. there was a slight pause as he tried to think of ideas. seeing as how ben had only been in town for a couple weeks, he was not very familiar with carmel. luckily, max was quick to offer a suggestion and save ben the effort of pretending he was thinking of ideas. "a movie sounds great. i can't remember the last time i went to the movies," he muttered thoughtfully. whenever he came back from tour, ben always had difficulty adjusting to being a normal person again. the idea of living somewhere where people didn't recognize him and he could go to the movies, it was nice. when her stomach growled, ben's eyebrows arched and it took him a moment to realize that breakfast was a normal thing too. it was difficult to keep the grin off his face. "i don't know about you, but i'm going to stay away from alcohol...at least for now."
when she looked at his kitchen, ben laughed nervously and shook his head. "i own one mug, right there," he pointed to the one next to the mattress. "and a couple plates, all of which i stole from the plane. i'm not proud of it, but i'm not good at this living alone thing." now that max was awake and sober, ben was finding that he was far more embarrassed about the state of his apartment. instead of taking a shower, maybe tidying up would have been a better idea. "so. no, i have no food," he smiled. "and i also have no idea how far away portabella is, uhm, not quite even sure where i live." pretty much, ben knew nothing about his surroundings. ben had never had a problem with it, but now in front of max, he was getting a bit flustered. "let me grab my wallet and find my phone. i think i should call a cab anyway." ben realized he was doing quite a bit of talking and he finally managed to shut himself up. max seemed to know the town much better than he did, so it was probably best to let her decide how they would get to the restaurant. "what do you think?"

instead, all she saw was apologetic eyes, and a bit of hope. and it'd been so long since she'd seen any kind of emotion like that purely displayed in someone's eyes.
max was sure the ecstatic feeling that had started to overwhelm her chest was obviously displayed as he started to agree to some of her suggestions. she had only seen two movies here at carmel, and she'd been by herself for both of them, so gaining some company for the big screen seemed like a brilliant idea. she could only nod and agree with him about the alcohol part, laughing a bit, even though she really didn't know why she found it funny. more than likely because the disaster had been adverted, and she was capable of laughing about it. "yeah.. plus, i don't think they serve alcohol before noon. so we'll just have to keep an eye on my coffee." smiling, she glanced back into his kitchen, searching for a clock. unable to see one, she decided to rely on her internal clock instead. it was usually a couple hours off, but it didn't feel like it was past noon, or really close to it, so she figured they had some time before the lunch rush came in for portabella's specials. it was just a matter of getting there from here.. where ever here was.
hearing him explain his dish situation, she couldn't hold back the laugh that had began to build at the sound of him stealing plates from a plane. "what? seriously?" she asked, almost not believing him. but, then she remembered what the rest of his apartment looked like; it was a little more than obvious that he wasn't used to this whole living situation. "you can write four minute songs and figure out how to match the lyrics up with music, but when it comes to buying your own dishes, you can't find your way?" laughing again, more so about the situation rather than at him, she shook her head and offered him a smile. "i could show you the stores downtown that're really good for that sorta stuff? you wont even get ugly roosters stuck to everything." the fact that he hadn't unpacked should've simply told her right there that he wasn't prepared for a breakfast meal to be made in his kitchen, so why she'd even bothered asking about it was beyond her. but at least it let her know a little bit more of the famous benjamin kanst: he stole dishes from planes.
when he asked for her thoughts, max couldn't contain the grin that pulled at the corners of her lips. "i think that calling a cab is a good idea. we can figure out transportation from portabella, which shouldn't be that hard." plus, after they actually got outside, and max was able to look at the surrounding streets, she'd be able to tell ben where he lived. at least, as long as he remembered the street name and a few around it, he might be able to find his way home every once in a while. "just.. wait to call the cab until i know where we are." grabbing her shoes, she plopped down on the mattress and started to work the converse onto her feet. lacing them up lazily, she tucked her jeans over the high tops before straightening back up, brushing herself off idly. max didn't feel the cleanest, considering she'd been wearing the same clothes the day before, but she didn't smell, and it wasn't like they were really dirty. she'd be fine until she made it back to the house to have her own shower. plus, her stomach's constant grumbling was proving to be too much of an annoyance to think about rushing home to jump in the shower.
feeling her pockets for everything she'd gone out with the night before, she nodded her head at herself, checking off her very own list inside her head. as soon as she knew she had everything, she shifted to lean against the wall near the door. "ready when you are, benny. oh! do you have a pair of sunglasses i could borrow?" she asked with a bit of a smile, pushing some hair back from her face. "i've been here for over a year and i still haven't gotten used to the sun." [atrb=style, background-color: 202020;]sorry there's not a lot to work with D: i hope their cuteness makes up for ittttt.

to keep himself from grinning too much, ben brought his hand up to his mouth, pretending to feel his stubble. it wasn't really stopping him from smiling like an idiot, but it helped to cover it up. at the mention of coffee, ben almost sighed in relief. just the idea of coffee was already making his slight hangover disappear. he had absolutely no idea what this restaurant served, but as long as there was coffee and max, ben knew he would be okay. "i'll just have to taste test your coffee, just to make sure," ben joked. "though, only if you promise to take care of me if i end up passing out." yawning slightly, he glanced around for his phone, trying to remember where he had placed it. honestly, ben had no internal clock whatsoever. with all the traveling he did, it was difficult for his body to keep up. ben was just going by max's statement earlier and just assuming that it was somewhere after eight and before noon. at least his phone would offer some help.
once he located his phone, ben was surprised to see it was only a little past nine. he felt like it had been so much later, but he wasn't complaining. holding his phone up, he showed max the time. "we can still definitely make breakfast." at max's reaction to his plate stealing, ben could feel the heat rising in his cheeks. he tucked his phone in his pocket and then his hands. ben shuffled awkwardly, staring at his feet. there was something so much more embarrassing about telling this to max than anybody else. "okay, writing songs is a lot easier than furnishing an apartment," ben gave her a crooked grin. "don't judge me." wrinkling his nose, he nodded in agreement, still trying to hide the slight blush. when max suggested that she show him places to buy these things, he almost breathed a sigh of relief. "i would really appreciate that." ben didn't even have to try to buy things to realize that it would end in disaster. he was the type of guy who couldn't be trusted to go to the grocery store without a shopping list. otherwise, ben would come back with everything, except what was needed.
it was a good thing max told him to wait, because ben had already pulled his phone out and clicked the number. perhaps he was a bit too eager to get out of his apartment. with a nervous laugh, he ended the call, and put the phone back in his pocket. his only way around town had been the taxi service so it was one of the very first numbers on his recent outgoing calls. ben realized that if he decided to stay in carmel longer, he would eventually learn how to drive. seeing as max already knew about his plate situation, ben figured he could wait a little to let her know he couldn't drive. at least, not well. or legally. "i think i have something with my address on it," he glanced around, shuffling through a small pile of paper on the kitchen counter. "here it is!" ben walked back with the paper, proudly showing max the address printed on. it was a copy of his lease, but it was good enough.
hoping it would help, ben sat down and grabbed his vans, slipping them on. as he was sitting, ben went ahead and called the taxi service. despite max telling him to wait, ben figured they could locate themselves while they waited. just as he was about to stand up, max spoke up. at the sound of the nickname, ben shook his head and laughed softly. "i think i do!" he leapt up to his feet and made his way over to his suitcase. ben only had two pairs of sunglasses. well, two he had found so far. as he looked for them, ben called back to her over his shoulder. "so you're still pretty new here. where are you from?" grabbing both of them, he made his way back to the door. "it's nice to see the sun without a screen of smog covering the sky. ever been to australia? now that's a view you can't miss," ben smiled and held up the sunglasses. "also, which one?"

at the sight of ben starting to blush, max had to hold back the large grin that wanted to break out over her face. she hated it when people saw her blush, though, so she figured this probably wasn't one of those situations where grinning like an idiot would be appropriate. she just couldn't really get over how cute it was to see him blush, rather than just get winded from singing on stage. "what? judge you?" she asked, slowly letting herself pull that grin out. "i think it's kinda bad ass. i mean, who else can say they've stolen dishes from a plane before?" arching her eyebrows, she shrugged her shoulders, indicating that she couldn't think of anyone else in the world who could say the same. and, to be honest, it made her think he was a lot more cuter than what she already thought.
the fact that max didn't even know where they were was a bit unsettling, but she had a little confidence still left in her that kept saying she'd be able to get them to portabella without any troubles. it wasn't like she'd really have to navigate or anything; taxi drivers were supposed to do that for you. that was one of the reasons why people used the cab services so much. it was better to let someone else take you somewhere, rather than get lost in an unfamiliar place. "okay, good," max called back as he went to look for his address. she knew that they could probably go read it off a sign somewhere, but having it right in front of them with the number of the building as well as the street was a little bit better. and as soon as his voice carried that he had it, max felt a small wave of relief wash throughout her veins. they were in good hands now. she took the paper when he went to show her, looking over the address carefully.
she recognized it as one of the apartment complexes on the east side of the town, but that was about it. if they'd been walking, though, after a few blocks, she knew she'd have run into something familiar. tucking the piece of paper in her pocket for safe keeping, so that they'd have it for the ride there, and the ride back, she smiled in thanks as ben took off on his search to find a pair of sunglasses for her. "yeah, kinda. i was born in detroit, and that's the only place i've lived other than here." she smirked when he approached her again, and she pushed her hands sheepishly into her pockets a bit, finding herself falling back into that really excited fan mode. "i've never been anywhere outside of the states. i haven't even crossed the boarder into canada. also," max slowly reached out and took the left pair he was holding, raising them to push onto her face. "these ones." flashing him a smile, she unlocked his apartment door and pulled it open, waiting for him to grab his keys before she exited, letting him play gentlemen.
when he scrambled to answer the taxi operator on the other end of the line, max quickly pulled out the slip of paper and held it up for him to read. when he blurted it out, she smirked and pushed it into his pocket, so that he'd have it for when they left portabella. exiting the building with him, max glanced around behind the aviators, squinting just a bit from the brightness. it took a moment for her eyes to adjust, but as soon as they did, she glanced back at ben and tried to decipher what he was thinking. unsuccessful, she gave up and chose to lean against the building instead.
"hey ben," she started slowly, tilting her head back against the apartment as she looked at him better. "thanks for last night. really. it's nice to be reminded that the music industry isn't filled with a whole bunch of douche bags." giving him another smile, she crossed her arms underneath her chest, glancing towards the direction she figured the cab would more than likely come. "oh, and uh.. i forgot my wallet." slowly, she glanced back over at him, her face seemingly serious. she couldn't hold it though, and before long, a smile was starting to crack through, and her laughter bubbled despite her best efforts. max was about to say that she'd cover the meal because of what he'd done for her, but the taxi's friendly horn startled her out of her train of thought. pushing off the wall, max made a break for the car, instigating a small race to the vehicle.
