america was just what she wanted, forever. if she could manage it, whenever her student visa expired, she would try and come back here. right now she was only her thanks to the graciousness of the U.S. government letting her study in california. eventually, though, whenever that deal ran out, america would become her home and she would live here. there were so many opportunities for dance here, too. ones she longed to explore. for now, though, she was in school for dance and journalism. she'd gotten a temporary apartment, the shortest lease she could manage less than a year, and she'd only barely gotten settled in. her things were still strewn all across her new home, and it was driving her crazy. harper hated messes. her life was clean, always (one of the only things her parents manages to rub off on her). looking at it was growing old, so harper walked over to one of the boxes that was laying on the ground, full of clothes, failed to be sorted into her drawers just yet. in it were some INSTERT OUTFIT HERE. it would due just fine. finding her keys on her coffee table (which was also supporting various plates and eating utensils that needed to go into cabinets), she headed out of the door and locked her apartment behind her.
in the next couple of weeks, she was getting a car. it was imposible to not have a car when you lived outside of a larger city and there was so many things to do. this town was just big enough to be a pain to walk all over the place. walking would due today. she was frustrated by this, but whatever, it's not like there were a ton of other options at this point. and besides, a walk would be a good release. for being a relatively small town, it had a lot of stuff to do. she hadn't realized this until she actually started walking around. a couple of places caught her eye, but one in particular...the arcade. they were fun for her. a grin crossed her face and she knew this was one place she couldn't just pass up. she opened the door and walked inside, a jingle signaling her entrance. she looked up at the bell, and kept walking into the place. flashing lights were everywhere, bells and ringing. all the fun stuff. stuffing her hand into her pocket, she hoped she had enough american dollars to actually place some games.

so far, today had been pretty slow. it was actually surprising, considering it was summertime. most of the time, there was a decent sized crowd at the arcade. even the kids who usually hung around had yet to make an appearance and the waves must have been good, because only a few tourists had wandered in. needless to say, xak was suffering from the lack of human contact and with no one to bother, he was bored. when xak was bored, it was never a good thing. there was still a couple hours left in his shift, but he'd already created a series of jewelry using paper clips and he was now working on a domino masterpiece. of course, this had required that he borrow some of the dominoes that were meant to be prizes. sometimes, he was really quite surprised that he hadn't been fired yet. then again, other than the mohawk and the strange quirks, xakery really was the model employee. that and it wasn't like very many people wanted to deal with screaming children and/or screaming adults.
so far, xakery's domino creation had taken up most of the space behind the counter, but he wasn't close to finishing. no, he was going to see how far he could get before it was time to close up. there were only so many boxes of dominoes though and so far, he'd only used up four boxes. at the moment, xak was lying flat on the floor, one eye closed, and his tongue stuck out in concentration. with each domino he placed, xak wiggled his way backwards. twice, he had leaned too far forwards and his mohawk had sent the line of dominoes cascading. it was frustrating to keep having to rebuild it, but it was wasting time, so he wasn't complaining that much. finishing with another box of dominoes, xak slowly got up and crept over to grab another box. he had just opened it and starting to line them up, when the bell on the door rang.
realizing there was a customer, xak had a moment of panic. he stood up rather quickly and in doing so, managed to hit his head. xak yelped in pain and took a step back, knocking over the dominoes. for a second, he stumbled around before standing up straight. with a grin, he turned to greet whoever had just walked in. "hi! welcome to arcade infinity!" he laughed nervously and adjusted his mohawk. "sorry! sorry, i didn't expect anyone to come in. can i help you?" xak shuffled and kicked some of the dominoes away to make room for his feet. "oh! for every fifteen dollars you spend, you get five dollars free. well, not really free, but you know, it's more on your card to play games with." in his nervousness, xak had sped through his words just a bit, and he only stopped to take a deep breath. he hadn't really thought about what he was going to say after though and xak stopped, giving her a grin.

"it's no big deal." she reasured him and laughed a little again, stepping farther into the arcade. it was lucky that this place wasn't too far from her apartmnet. she would be there almost every day.
this guy was also talking freakishly fast. that was amusing to her. she scratched the back of her head and decided how much she was willing to spend on video games. and it would be way more than fifteen dollars, if she'd had that much to spare on them. it was hard for her to contol her money sometimes. she saw what she awnted and just wanted to get it. plus, she'd never had a whole lot of problems getting money in london. her parents were pretty okay, money wise, and they were willing to get her things if she really wanted to them. sometimes, it was an argument though, just because they didn't trust her judement. they thought she was always out to defy them. and, honestly, she was a lot of the time. she defied them at times, just because they were so anxious to confine her. it's what they got, really.
she checked her pockets, hoping there was something in there but a euro. to her luck, she had some u.s. dollars. she grinned and walked over to the counter, placing a twenty in front of the guy. "it's about all i've got on me at the moment, so that five bucks free would be lovely." she assured him with a smile. she looked around her at all the games and then looked down at the dominos from over the counter. "really, dominos?" she smiled and thought for a moment. "i'd question your actions, you being a grown man and all..." she paused and looked around her. "but i suppose you do work in an arcade... and i am a grown woman coming into an arcade, so i can't really talk shit." she shrugged it off a little bit and looked at the games, straying, discovering a racing game, two set up next to each other. she looked at them and then looked back over at the counter. "hey domino boy, come race me. it's not like you're doing anything anyway." she sat down and played with the steering wheel a little bit while she waited for him to get over here. "hurry up so i can kick your ass."

the impact on the counter had hurt xak a bit more than he had showed. he wasn't about to let a little bump affect the job he was meant to do, even if it did really hurt. before he began his long rant on specials, xak rubbed his head and ran both of his hands to spike his mohawk back up. it would probably need a little more gel later to keep it that way. the amount of product he put in his hair was probably unhealthy, but he was dead set on keeping his mohawk. when she spoke, it was hard for xak to contain the grin on his face. "whoooa, you're not from around here are you? i mean, i've never seen you and i've lived here for forever. plus, the whole...." xak gestured at his neck, as if the motion would indicate the word he was searching for. "accent. it's really cool. where are you from?"
his eyes narrowed as he studied her, trying to figure out where her accent was from. xak had never been outside of california, so it was difficult for him to peg accents. he finally shut up when she spoke again and just shrugged. "there's nothing wrong with dominoes. i need to keep myself entertained somehow," he smiled at her. "sometimes we need to be childish." glancing down at the counter, xak took the twenty and opened the counter to grab one of the arcade cards. "all right, so that means you get twenty-five dollars on this card. just give me a second." it took him a moment to get her total on the card and once he did, xak slid the card to add the money. "there you go! all set." by the time he looked up though, his 'customer' had already moved on though. his eyebrows shot up when he realized she was gone and xak glanced around wildly, trying to find out where she went. when she spoke up, his head turned to see her and he sighed in relief.
there wasn't anyone else in the arcade, so it wasn't like xak had to be at the counter. he figured it was time he took a little break anyway. kicking the dominoes out of the way, he made his way over to the racing game. "i have a name you know!" sitting down, he pointed to his name tag and grinned. "what's your name?" xak made himself comfortable and handed her the arcade card. "since you're the only one here, this first game is on me," xak shifted in his seat and pulled his wallet out. he fished out his arcade card and swiped his machine before leaning over and swiping hers. xak tucked both his wallet and the card away. "also, i should warn you, i have the high score on just about every single one of these games," he beamed, proud of his own accomplishment. it probably just meant he spent too much time in the arcade, but it was something he had worked hard on and he was proud of himself.

"i'm from london. i've only been a here a few months... i'd say you accent was cool, but everyone around here has them." she said with a smile, not trying to be offensive, but honest. what she really wanted to hear was someone from the south. or the east coast. apparently they had even funnier accents.
sometimes we need to be childish
how true that was. harper wanted to tell all of her previous dance instructors this. they were always so caught up in perfection and getting everything right and being general tight asses. it was annoying to her and something she'd never understood. dance wasn't about perfection. she felt like her instructors needed to be reminded that it was okay to be sloppy, as long as you loved what you were doing. yeah, mushy cliche thought coming from harper? not typically. but it applied in that particular situation. this guy seemed to be the epitome of knowing what it was like to need to be a little childish, and she'd ony been around him for a couple of moments. his appearance spoke it simply enough. he had bright pink hair for christs sake. but it was completely awesome, it gave him personality and showed he didn't care what people thought. and that he was in touch with his inner child. he was someone she could hang out around, for sure. "bring my card, would you?" she shouted to him.
he had another name? it was xak, according to his name tag, but that was so much less fun than 'domino boy'. "my name is harper." she informed him. it was cool that he was offering to pay for her game. she got in the seat and said "well, thanks, i just feel bad that you're going to lose." she was a slightly competative person at times. although she danced for the love of it, it made her competative. you couldn't get palces without at least trying to be better than some people. she laughed a little bit and shrugged. "i'm sure you do, how often do you play these games?" she asked him. she would be shocked if he hadn't played these games until he knew them inside and out. harper had a feeling she'd end up spending many days, learning these games until she knew them almost better than he did. but not quite, since guys just seemed to be bred to be better at video games.

xak had always wanted to travel, but he didn't have the money, and it wasn't exactly like taking a couple weeks off work would help. still, it didn't hurt to dream. living in carmel, he did meet tourists from all around, but rarely from overseas. "that's so cool," he breathed with genuine interest. "what are you doing here? i mean, if you don't mind me asking. if i lived somewhere like london, i wouldn't want to leave. well, carmel's interesting, but not that interesting." once xak started talking, it was really difficult for him to stop. sometimes he had to remind himself that if he kept asking questions, eventually he had to give the other person time to respond. with a sheepish grin, xak stopped himself and tried to listen. "oh no, i wish i had a cool accent. an american one is pretty boring. i don't even have a weird california accent." strangely enough, xak had managed to avoid that one. it was probably because his parents weren't from california, but he was glad.
after trying to keep himself from continuing on about accents, xak was more than happy to take a break from his work. he wasn't sure how much longer dominoes would keep him entertained. however, it would be interesting to see how xak would manage to pick them all up later. jumping in the seat, he glanced at her for a moment. "well it's nice to meet you harper." |
[/b] growing up with an older brother, xak had always competed with him to see who was better. even though his brother had moved away, it still left xak with a rather competitive nature. that was part of the reason why he had taken the time to beat all the high scores in the arcade. "we'll see about that!" he grinned, hoping that for the first time, he had found someone who could keep up. occasionally, xak found a gaming partner, but most of the time, they were teenagers. he needed someone who was his own age. it was hard enough finding anybody to play paintball with him and surprisingly even harder to find an arcade buddy. as he picked his car, xak glanced over at harper. "well, i work most days and...i get bored,"[/b] he smiled and shrugged. "my boss doesn't really care if i play the games, but i play them so much that sometimes i have to find something else to keep me entertained. like dominoes." it was simply impossible for xak to remain bored for too long. it was good for his mental health and after a bit, he tended to do destructive things. his head turned back to the screen as the countdown started. the second the light turned green, xak slammed his foot down on the accelerator. his usual grin had been replaced with a look of grim determination. "i came here for school. and to live on my own, you know. the normal stuff why anyone leaves home." she shrugged it off and laughed as he mentioned the accent. "they're normal to me. obviously." american accents were just weird, kind of improper sounding, and it was impossible for her to do one. she'd tried a couple of times, but it just didn't work out well for her. her voice wasn't made for an american accent, it seemed.
harper sat down at her wheel, happy to be behind one. it had been forever since she'd driven. she wasn't prepared to drive behind the wheel of any of these weird american cars. they were just weird, and she kind of hated it. but, eventually, she needed to get over it and just buy a car. it would take awhile, but eventually she would talk her parents into letting her do it. this would do for now. "it's so on." she said, eyes lighting up a bit. she picked her car and the race bgan in 3...2...1! harper wasn't in the lead, that was for sure. it took a little ganging up to try and beat him. after awhile, they switched between first and second for awhile, but eventually harper ran into a wall and her car flipped a couple of times. then, xak one. that was disappointing, but it was a close call, so harper was proud of the effort, going up against this kind of guy. "with practice, i'll win. don't get too confident." she squinted her eyes at him, not wanting to come to terms with the fact that she'd just lost. it wasn't something she was used to so she would just attribute it to driving on the funny side of the street or something like that.
"this is a pretty sweet set up you got, then, huh?" she asked. it would be awesome to be able to just play games all day and hang out with people that loved to play, too. although, it seemed like a lot of the people that came in here were a lot younger than they were. she seemed younger than him, but still. it was better than hanging out with a bunch of teenagers. or old people. but most of the people harper hung out with were older than her, so this wouldn't be much different.

is riding down to the station where you lived when we were school kids hey the rails are caught now and i am falling down fools in a spiral round this town of steam my body tells me no but i won't quit 'cause i want more
growing up in carmel, xak's parents had never tried to control anything he did. just about everything was left up to him. even the few times xak and his brother had come home with a police escort, his parents had given them relatively mild punishments. seeing as how xak still lived in his hometown, he never really had a reason to leave home. except for school, which he could understand. xak just grinned in return. "born and raised in carmel, so you know, haven't really left home. well, except for college, but i came back. so i don't know if that counts. does it?" he drew his eyebrows together and gazed off in the distance for a moment. xak muttered to himself for a second, trying to figure out an answer to his own question. in the end though, he just gave up. "anyway, cars! come on!"
at her challenge, xak merely grinned and shifted in his seat. if there was one car he could drive, it was this one. no one had ever really trusted him with his own car. seeing as how, xak probably would have been a terribly reckless driver. sometimes he was just too absentminded. besides, it wasn't like he could afford his own car at the moment. his bike did for now. still, xak had underestimated how good harper was. there weren't very many people who could even keep up, much less come very close to beating him. in the end though, xak barely edged out her car and the second his car zoomed across the finish line, xak threw his hands up in the air. there was a slight victory dance, but it wasn't as long as his usual one. turning to beam at harper, he twisted around in his seat. "i'm sure you could. most of the time, i usually lap the people i play with," frowning slightly, he shrugged. "then again, most of them are younger than fifteen. i can't say it's a great victory."
with a shrug, xak stood up and started walking back to the counter. "it is pretty cool. the job pays all right, but hey, it's not really much work and...and i get to keep my mohawk." that was probably one of the reasons xak even took the job. he didn't want to sacrifice his haircut for some job. "any other games you want to play? i should probably get back to standing around and doing nothing. i should also clean up the dominoes. do they come in a certain order? because i kind of got them all mixed up when i kicked them over. i really hope they don't." pausing for a moment, xak sunk into a deep thought. he didn't really want to clean up either. "or i could just take an extra long break. it's not like anybody's around. i'm bored. keep me entertained!" with that, xak grabbed the back of the chair and swung himself around so that he was lying across the chair, his head facing harper. "hi."
