» description of apartment
"600 square feet. spacious one bedroom with master suite with tub, separate shower, and walk-in closet. kitchen with tile, built-in microwave, and breakfast bar. laundry room with extra storage. patio and balcony."
ben has just recently moved in. the place is about the same size as the apartment he had in new york, but without the presence of another person, the place feels incredibly spacious. the place is still largely unfurnished. ben has a few pieces of furniture that require assembly and he's just been too lazy to put together. most of what he has brought from new york is still either in a suitcase or packed in boxes. a majority of his belongings are still in new york, so ben is still trying to figure out how he's going to bring them over. he's sleeping on a mattress in the living room while he works on unpacking.
» history
if there was every any love between benjamin's parents, it existed long before ben's time. his parents both grew up in the same small town where everybody knew each other. the two of them were married right out of high school and moved to new york in hopes of finding a better life. neither of them took the drastic change from small town to big city very well. almost immediately, they realized that the city had so much more to offer them than the life they had originally planned out. there was so much to discover and both of them realized they didn't have to settle for each other. however, neither of them were willing to separate and venture alone into a new life, so they tried to make it work. after nearly two years of constant bickering and apologizing, the two decided the best way to make their relationship work was a child. honestly, the idea didn't make very much sense, but it was the one thing they could agree on.
essentially, ben was a last ditch effort to save the failing marriage. needless to say, it didn't work very well. for a time, his parents did seem to get along better, but it was a short-lived event and by the time ben was born, they were at each other's throats again. the only problem was now they had a child and neither of them could afford to raise a child on their own. throughout ben's childhood, both of his parents worked odd jobs. his father usually took the graveyard shift wherever work was available and his mother did some secretary work. this ensured that at least one of them was home with ben at all times and also, they rarely had to see each other. most of the time, they lived paycheck to paycheck and bounced from motels to dingy apartments. the family was dysfunctional, but somehow it worked.
the family lived like this until ben had to start school. his parents were settling in long-lasting jobs and they moved into a somewhat decent apartment. the heater was temperamental, but it was home. as he grew old enough to understand how much his parents disliked each other, ben made it a point to stay away from home as much as possible. he wasn't allowed to wander outside the apartment complex, so he made friends with the neighbors. the walls were thin, so just about everybody knew how much ben's parents argued. the neighbors were nice enough to offer him a safe haven after school until he absolutely had to go home. the old lady in apartment 13A gave him cookies if he would water her plants and the man in apartment 16C would let ben play his guitar if he helped with the groceries. ben even met his best friend, landon, right across the hall.
landon had a similar home situation to ben and so the two bonded rather quickly. up through elementary and middle school, they did everything together. at that age, with no parental supervision, this usually meant they were getting into some type of trouble. once they were older, the neighbors were less likely to put up with the two, and so they were forced to find a new place to hide. both of them had a strong love for music, so it was only right that their new hideout was a record store, located right around the corner from their school. the shop owner was kind enough to let the two of them stay, but only if they stayed out of trouble. it was here where ben picked up guitar from the older kids and if he was lucky, a couple lessons on the drums. the older kids weren't exactly a positive influence and by the time ben was starting high school, he was falling in with the wrong crowd.
ben began cutting school and staying away from home more frequently to be with friends. while ben was focused on learning the guitar, landon was actually trying to do well in school. this caused a rift between the two of them two form and eventually, they just grew apart. ben and his new friends had started a band. well, at least they called themselves one. it was really a group of teenagers banging away on instruments and playing awful covers of bands they admired. by fourteen, ben had his first tattoo (the first of many) and by sixteen, he was skipping school to nurse hangovers. the group had been narrowed down to just four of them and they realized they actually had some talent. after two years of messing around, they decided to actually apply themselves. it was no longer a dream to be in a band, they were going to make it happen.
soon after graduating high school, the now official band tried to make a name for themselves. it wasn't easy, but after a couple years of playing in questionable bars and sending in demo tapes to anyone who would listen, they were discovered. ben had been working odd jobs to support himself, but after they were signed, they now had paying gigs. a few short months later, the band had released their first album, and they were touring. after spending his entire life, feeling like he didn't belong, ben had finally found a place where he fit in. it had taken nearly twenty years, but the band was his family now. the tour brought a new city everyday, with different venues and different screaming fans. for ben, the entire thing was very surreal and a complete blur.
before he knew it, the band was working on their second album. there was another tour, and then a third album. somewhere in between, ben met audrey. they met at an award's show, where audrey was working backstage. they only talked for a few minutes, but ben left with her number. he ended up calling her and asking her out on a date. the two of them instantly hit it off and before long, the two of them were dating. the relationship had been going strong for almost two years when ben left again for tour. everything had seemed fine, or so he thought. when he came back, ben found out that audrey had been cheating on him for almost six months. furious, he broke things off with her. somewhat drunk, ben decided he needed to get away from new york. he picked a random city and decided to move there. now he's in carmel, california and ben's starting to enjoy the move.
