The place was toward the far edge of town, where things weren't quite as neat and tidy and well-kept; the grass sprawled along the edges of the pavement, and the dividing lines - if there had ever been any - were long faded away. But with the roof down and the sounds of civilization far behind them, Seth could hear the ocean and he had never been more sure of anything than he was of this move.
He pulled into a little gravel lot, the front of the car sweeping under the scraggly branches of the trees hanging over the parking space, then turned the key in the ignition and glanced at Ev as the engine fell silent.
"Here we are," he said brightly, even if it was an unnecessary statement, and unbuckled his belt, jumping over the side of the car without bothering to open the door (they'd never bothered - why start now?). They'd been on the road for what felt like ages, living off of late night grocery store runs and gas station coffee and free motel breakfasts. Seth was surprised by how well his modest little car had held up; a minimum of tire changes, only two almost-emergency stops at roadside mechanics, only four unsightly dings in the wind shield, and absolutely covered in mud and dust and dead bugs. But it had made it, and that was all he really cared about. He gave it a good pat before turning to face what had once been his Aunt's vacation home, stretching his arms out over his head. A small, weathered fence ran along the front of a tiny, overgrown yard, leading up to the relatively modern-looking abode; the cottage was unobtrusively white, but with a dark, navy blue roof and door and two friendly-looking windows, both with empty flower pots along their sills. After a moment of observation, Seth strode forward and onto the property, each step displaying a more pronounced bounce of enthusiasm than the last. By the time he reached the door, he was grinning, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Ev was on his heels.
"Ready?" he asked, sliding the key into the lock. It stuck for a moment, and then turned with a satisfying click. Slowly, Seth pulled the door open, expecting a dim hallway beyond. However, the space was surprisingly open - enough so that they could see all the way through to the windows on the other side of the house, which clearly showed the wide porch and the coastal vegetation and, beyond that, the blue-green-grey of the ocean.

Just because they were driving didn't mean Ev had no anxiety. This was the furthest he's ever been anywhere ever. And even though he was with Seth, he still had a slight shake in his hands when they were held up, and his stomach didn't feel all there most of the time. He had never been so far away from the ocean before, nor did he ever see such large mountains and such beautiful historical monuments on the way. Even though the food wasn't always cooked by Seth, it was still pretty good. The whole drive there all in all was a success. Though, at some points Ev was sure they would have to stop everything and live wherever the car had nearly blown up (or needed a tire change, same thing).
Shaved down almost completely to the skin before they had left Florida, Sparta was panting excitedly in Ev's lap as they drove around the town that was now the one they lived in. Ev took notice in many details. The trees, the lightly clothed people, the shops and stores, the restaurants. The one thing that was most noticeable yet not visible was the smell of the town. It smelled like... well, how Ev would describe paradise. The town wasn't too big to get lost in nor too small to run into the same person twice in a day. He liked it here, but he was done with driving and done with getting lost and not knowing where they were. His nerves were fried and he was ready to lay down and relax and just not drive anywhere for a long time.
As they neared the location, everything else was seemingly far behind. In fact, Ev was about to as if maybe they had taken another wrong turn and were driving out of town until he noticed they were about to park. Looking around, Sparta made circles in his lap as the engine died. A smile raised on his lips as Seth noted they were there, and Ev could feel his hands start to shake again. He was so excited to see this place. But dropping everything they had back in Florida for something they'd never seen before... It was such a risk. A risk Ev was willing to take so long as Seth was beside him. He hopped out of the car, Sparta in his arm like a fat, overheated football and he set her down. Windsor had flopped himself out of the car before being helped and Tuna waited politely for Ev to scoop her up and set her down like the lady she was.
He let out a breath as he looked over the home. Sure, it could use a little weed pulling from the cracks in the sidewalk, and maybe the bushes could be trimmed out of the view of the house. But really, Ev saw no flaws. It wasn't anything like back in Florida. No, Ev thought their little duplex back there was home. But this... There was privacy, there was a nice fenced yard. The beach could be heard, and the air smelled sweet with no need for candles or air freshener. This was home.
Ev walked behind Seth, perhaps too close, and made sure he didn't stub his toe on the back of Seth's heel as they walked up onto the front porch. Letting in a breath, Ev bumped into Seth a little when he had stopped. His face lit up a bit and he nodded. "Yea." He said, and put his hand up on Seth's shoulder as the door opened up to a very open room and Ev leapt in as agile as Sparta did. "wOW!" He walked in a sharp circle and looked over at Seth, his eyes wide and his mouth dropped in an open smile. "It's huge!" He opened his arms and turned around again, walking over into the kitchen and opening the fridge, then turning and looking out the windows and peeking over to the back porch. "Oh look at the back yard Sef!" He nearly stumbled as he twisted around and headed for the stairway, tripping a little midway up before stopping at the door at the top. "Come look up here!" He opened the door and looked around the one bedroom in the house. It was perfectly clean and tidy and primped up and it reminded Ev of those fancy little tiny super detailed dollhouses you see at fairs and competitions over weird things like that. "This is amazing!" He walked over to the window and laughed out loud. "There's so much room up here Sef!" Sparta had followed Ev up into the bedroom and was snuffing around quietly, keeping close to Ev's feet as he walked around, finally sitting on the edge of the bed and letting out a sigh.
