ben had never seen a town come together to plan events. considering that he grew up in a city of eight million people, it was very strange to see neighbors who knew each other by name. it was even stranger to see people getting together to set up booths and tents and rides. needless to say, ben had never seen or been to a carnival. he didn't even know these things actually existed. when max had called, ben could hear the excitement in her voice and it was impossible for him not to accept her invitation. seeing as how ben had been trying to figure out how to ask her out on a date, the carnival presented itself as the perfect opportunity. now, the only problem was that ben hadn't been on a date in nearly four years and he liked max. ben was aware the chances of it ending in diaster were small, but after the last time, he couldn't be sure. hours before ben was supposed to meet max, he was in a panic. this was the first time in a long time that he wanted to impress somebody this badly. while he was picking out something to wear, ben skyped his drummer.
of course, aaron wanted to know what ben was doing. the second aaron found out about ben's possible new crush, he was already calling their guitarist. in turn, the guitarist called their bassist. once they found out about max, they wanted to know all the details. the entire thing turned into the three of them, making fun of ben. an hour later, all of them were yelling at each other and it was impossible to figure out what was going on. they all wanted to know about max, but ben wasn't giving them anything. at one point, they were all arguing about something, but ben couldn't figure it out, so he just shouted. finally, ben shouted some vague promise about letting them meet her. seeing as how ben's parents weren't in the picture, the band was embarrassing family. he wasn't quite ready to subject max to that yet, even if she was a fan. despite the protests, ben slammed his laptop shut and left to go meet max.
seeing how excited max was about the carnival, ben kept his mouth shut and let her talk. the way she kept talking was absolutely adorable. it was making it incredibly hard for ben to resist trying to pull her into a kiss. he had insisted on paying for the tickets, just like he was going to insist on paying for everything. the second they got through the gates though, ben nearly dropped his jaw in surprise. "holy crap, this is an actual thing," he laughed and started wandering towards the nearest set of flashing lights. "and this happens every year? max, this is awesome." grabbing max's hand, he pulled her as he nearly took off running. for a moment, ben felt like he was five and there was the need to run around to explore everything. he hadn't realized how excited he would be, but there was something about the carnival. finally, ben stopped and turned to face max. "this is seriously amazing. i am so glad you brought me here. i've traveled the world and i've never seen a carnival. oh my god, is that cotton candy?"
squeezing her hand lightly, ben laughed softly at himself and grinned at her. "okay, you need to pick what we're going to do first. i feel like a child with a.d.d. there is just too much for my mind to focus."

max was ready hours before she was supposed to meet ben. since she had woken up that morning, she'd been ecstatic. only hearing an agreement from ben's side of the phone after she'd called only made her that much more excited; it was fun to go to the carnival, alone or not, but having company to experience it with you always made it better. plus, max could only imagine the types of reactions he'd get from the different games. for some reason, watching ben try and toss basket balls into hoops to win a dinky little prize had her more than eager. but, while she waited, max occupied herself with charging her camera and her cell phone, finding her favourite pair of sunglasses, and decided what earrings she'd be wearing. her outfit had already been put together after she'd showered, so that was well out of her way.
when the time finally rolled around to meet ben, max almost lost track of the clock. she'd absorbed herself into her new batman manga book, considering it's one of the few she hasn't read all the way through yet, and nearly didn't realize that she could - finally - get out of her apartment. grabbing her bag after stuffing her hoodie inside it, she pulled her shoes on and headed out the door, locking up behind her. she walked surprisingly fast to meet ben outside his apartment building, and as soon as they were on their way to the carnival, she found herself rambling between the different types of rides they'd probably have, and the different attractions for entertainment. she had no idea that she had been talking for most of the trip by herself, and she hadn't given ben much room to put his input in, but her excitement was exploding inside of her. and, unfortunately for ben, this was the first time that she'd ever had company for the carnival that wasn't family, so it was a little bit more exciting to be around someone who people might think was her.. y'know, boyfriend.
the fact that ben had insisted on paying their way on made max scruff her face up in dislike, but she knew it was a losing battle, so trying to win was useless. but she was determined to use her bank card at least once tonight, whether or not she had to pry ben's credit card out of his own hand in order to do so. she'd been busy adjusting the bracelet they had put on her wrist to let people know that they had paid their fair share when they headed through the main gate, and her eyes were distracted. but just from hearing ben's voice, max glanced up and instantly forgot about the slight tightness that the fragile bracelet had to it. it was almost sunset, so the lights to everything was brightly on, and the general atmosphere even from the entrance was intoxicating. max was quick to fall into step beside ben, wanting to explore just as much as he did. "yep. every year," she responded proudly, even though she really had no part in the carnival other than enjoying it.
the hand grab was unexpected, and max was grateful that ben was too busy leading the way to notice the heavy flush her cheeks had started to take on. but she held his hand in return anyway, enjoying the heat she felt from his palm in her own. even with the slight distraction of the physical contact, however, max was still well aware of their surroundings, and her grin kept getting bigger and bigger with each excited step that ben made them take. when he stopped to face her, it was hard not to nod her head excitedly in agreement, but she resisted, not wanting to look like an idiot. "never? holy shit." max didn't have much room to judge, but she was really glad that this was his first time. it made it feel more.. special.
"uhmmm," she started, raising her free hand to adjust her sunglasses, pushing them up into her hairline. glancing around, max blinked her eyes slowly, trying to pick out the perfect thing they could conquer together first. as soon as her eyes landed on the carnival's well-known haunted house, she had already started to move, tugging ben's hand to pull him alongside her. "there!" she vaguely pointed towards the large gothic looking house, nestled on the other side of the carnival grounds. it was an actual house, which made the tour a lot better than some cheesy halloween maze. and, another better thing about it, was that you could explore at your own discretion. sure, if you were holding up inside the house for longer than they figured was comfortable for their standards, they were allowed to try and scare you from the house, but there were no rules stating you only had a certain amount of time to explore. it was one of max's favourites, especially since they changed the house every year for the carnival. not to mention some of the renovations that they've added onto the house; last year they added a false floor in the basement with a four foot drop into a dark well-like stature.
"if you're scared of the dark, ben, right now's probably a good time to tell me," she whispered into his ear once they had stopped outside the house. the 'house's caretaker' was waiting for them on the porch, eyeing the both of them in a sinister way. his rugged old man appearance was almost as creepy as how old the house looked, and max squeezed ben's hand to reassure herself that the chilling feeling she was starting to get from his stare was all fake. smoke and mirrors. "ready?" stepping forward, she walked with ben up the front steps of the house, waving her bracelet-clad arm in sight of the man. he growled something incoherent and abruptly pulled the door to the house open for them, waiting until they were almost inside to start his cackle. as soon as they were inside, the door slammed shut, killing most of the light in the foyer of the large mansion, the old man's laughter still hanging in the air from behind the heavy door. well i'm sick of this town bringing me down a vast world epidemic all around i'm sick of this town bringing me down a lost generation trying to act profound oh you upper class daughters and working class sons it's hard to save a dollar the world's run
the thrill and excitement of the carnival had ben half-wishing that he grown up in a small town. when his father had either stormed out of the apartment, or drank himself to sleep after a fight, ben's mother used to tell him about the town they grew up in. after seeing what new york had to offer, ben could never figure out why they had ever left. it seemed so peaceful compared to the chaos of the city. now that ben knew carmel had a carnival, it was only making his 'vacation' drag on that much longer. well that, and there was max. ben didn't really plan on moving back to new york anytime soon. there just weren't very many reasons to leave. besides, he had convinced himself that moving now would be far too much of a hassle. it had taken ben this long to unpack the few boxes he'd brought with him and honestly, he wasn't going to put the effort into packing it up again.
ben had grabbed max's hand as an anchor. even in his excitement, ben knew if he lost her in the crowd, he wouldn't be able to find his way out. "every year..." he muttered under his breath. taking in the scenery, ben slowly turned and glanced back at max. it was only then that he noticed he had taken her hand. seeing as how max hadn't protested, there was no way ben was letting her hand go now. shifting his hand slightly, ben got a better grip and tried to keep himself standing still. "i know right? you would think i'd have at least seen a carnival." it was all too much for ben to take in and he was glad max was there to make the decision on what to do first. standing close to max, ben watched her as she looked around. the second she pointed towards the haunted house, ben turned to follow her finger. when he saw the house, ben hesitated slightly. the house actually looked terrifying, but max didn't seem to care. in his hesitation, max had pulled him along and ben reluctantly followed. it wasn't that he didn't want to go, ben just didn't want to make a fool out of himself.
it was too late to protest by the time they reached the stairs. all he could do now was suck it up and try not to scream like a girl. laughing softly, ben gripped her hand a little tighter and stood closer to her. "will you hold me if i am?" eyeing the old man at the door, ben managed a nervous grin. "ready as i'll ever be." as they stepped into the house, ben took a deep breath. he jumped slightly when the door slammed closed behind them. it took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness, but when they did, the setup in the house actually sent a shudder down his spine. "this is amazing. are we trying to find our way out then?" it was oddly quiet in the foyer, but the occasional blood-curdling scream let ben know that they weren't alone. keeping close to max, ben ventured slightly to examine a nearby statue. "oh wow. look at the detail."
just as he was about to turn around, there was a loud growl and the 'statue' lunged at him. with a short cry of terror, ben ducked down just in time and pulled max close, cowering against her. "shit. that's fucking scary!" he could feel his heart pounding against his chest and when ben finally realized what happened, he laughed at his own reaction. "okay, maybe you should lead the way."

luckily, for this haunted house, max still had ben. and, even if he couldn't protect himself against things like moving statues, she at least felt better being with someone to share the experience.
"yep, basically. but the house was renovated to act like the winchester house. you know, the house with all those doors that lead to completely no where half the time?" max asked, her smile growing as her excitement grew. it was a maze within these walls, and she was more than eager to get started in their trip of lost scares. "they only let three groups in at once, and don't check for the lost people until almost closing," she mused softly, glancing at him as he started to check things out. "i hope you're good with direction, benji." smiling, she watched him as he inspected the statue, her eyebrow raising with slight amusement as he grew closer. most of the decorations were rigged, but a lot of the time they didn't go off until you were least expecting it. so when it flinched forward, max's own heart sped up, and she almost released a small shriek of startle. luckily, ben cowering into her side had her laughing before it could escape, and it was a little hard to keep most of it in.
"i think that's a good idea," she agreed with a nod of her head to his suggestion. glancing around, max's lips pursed while she thought, her eyes squinting through the dimly lit foyer to try and get an idea of which direction they should head. "okaaaaaay, how about.. basement?" she asked slowly, looking back over at ben with that eagerness again. "we'll get the scarier stuff over first." before ben could protest or agree, max grabbed his hand again and tugged him down the main hallway, past the double staircases that lead up to a rather gruesome-looking upstairs. although her excitement was unbearable, she still took cautious steps down the hall, each creek and squeak sounding underneath her converse making her more and more nervous that something would pop out of no where.
"right or lef-" max was about to ask about their direction once they came to the end of the hallway, only two ways being presented, when she felt someone graze the back of her shoulder, successfully sweeping her hair in the process. instantly, she cut herself off from speaking and released a startled gasp, jumping from the eerie feel. she whipped around, her cell phone retrieved from her pocket to use as a flash light. "holyfuck. hooooly fuck!" slowly, after not seeing any signs of anyone, she started to laugh at herself and held her free hand over her heart. "that scared the shit out of me. was that you?" she asked, looking at ben a bit suspiciously. she hadn't even heard anyone creek up the hallway behind them, which was the reason why she was half-disbelieving it'd been someone who was working there. "you better hope it wasn't, benny-boy. i'm a real pain in the ass when it comes to scare pranks." grinning,s he elbowed him softly and started to push him towards the door on the left, which appeared to be the kitchen, considering it was farther away from the spot where she'd been scared half to shit.
"keep your eyes open for a flashlight. they usually riddle the place with useful items for.. well, light. obviously." turning her cell phone's lock screen back on, she slipped it into her pocket and fastened her fingers with his once more. "the basement stairs should be around here somewhere.." [atrb=style, background-color: 202020;]ta daaaaaa (:

well i'm sick of this town bringing me down a vast world epidemic all around i'm sick of this town bringing me down a lost generation trying to act profound oh you upper class daughters and working class sons it's hard to save a dollar the world's run
most of the time, ben celebrated halloween by getting incredibly drunk and eating candy corn. he couldn't even remember the last time he had been to a haunted house. even then, it hadn't been anything as serious as the one at the carnival. not to mention, max's explanation of the haunted house was doing nothing for ben's false bravado. "closing time? max, i don't even know where i live," he laughed softly and gave her hand a light squeeze. "please tell me that you're good with direction." ben was really hoping she was too, because if they were depending on his sense of direction, the two of them would have been in the house until closing time. the statue was just one of the reasons why ben typically wasn't allowed in the real world by himself. he should have known that something would have happened. it took all he had to keep in his real scream, which probably would have been several octaves higher. however, it was a great excuse to get close to max. as he cowered into her side, ben found it difficult to pull himself away. with a soft smile, ben forced himself to stand up straight again. "i think so too."
at her suggestion, ben's eyebrows furrowed and it was impossible to keep himself from seeming too uncertain. "oka-" before he could finish his sentence, max had already started pulling him down the hallway. he was practically tripping over his feet as he followed her, trying to keep a watch out for anything that would pop out. seeing as he had already been caught off-guard once, ben didn't want it to happen again. however, he couldn't guaratee that wouldn't happen and it was already making him incredibly paranoid. as they made their way towards the basement, ben fell in step next to max. "first though, promise me something," he whispered, occasionally checking over his shoulder. "what happens in this house, stays in this house." ben was almost positive that he was going to scream like a little girl at least once. "i already hate this," he hissed. they hadn't even reached the basement and for some reason, ben was whispering like everything was a secret. maybe it was because the house was so quiet, every time he spoke, it sounded so loud.
the second they reached the end of the hallway, ben was glancing around trying to decide which route would be best. "now wha-AT?!" his question had turned into more of a yell. even though he hadn't seen or felt anything, max's gasp and sudden movement had startled ben. "what is it? what happened?" ben had clamped his hand tighter around max's and was now wildly glancing around. he had no idea what he was looking for and the lack of explanation was not calming him down at all. "was what me?" the sudden appearance of her cellphone light only made him jump again. his heart was pounding so hard that ben was convinced he'd come very close to having a heart attack. when she started laughing, ben could only give her a bewildered look and shake his head in disbelief. "whatever it was, trust me, it wasn't me." forcing a smile, he wrinkled his nose when max elbowed him. "i'm sure you are and believe me, i wasn't planning on having a heart attack anytime soon."
still glancing around for whatever had scared max, ben slowly backed towards the door. now that max wasn't holding his hand, he felt significantly less safe. "i'm not sure i would trust anything i find around here." digging around in his pocket, ben pulled out his phone and found the app for the flashlight. it had come in handy on occasion and ben kept it. luckily, it was perfect for this situation. the flashlight drained the power on his phone, but the light would help. turning it on, he shined the light down both hallways. holding his hand out for max, he was thankful when she slipped her hand into his again. "all right, well there's a door down this way..." carefully, ben started walking towards the door. he had just turned the corner when he felt something something brush the side of his neck. twitching violently, ben practically threw himself against the other side of the hallway. "oh god, what was that?" shuddering, he quickened his pace and grabbed the door, pulling it open. even in his hurry, ben stopped dead in his tracks. "that is very dark," he muttered, turning his phone light towards the stairs. "ladies first?"

"yeah, i think i can get us outta here before closing. if not, i've got cookies in my bag? we shouldn't get sugar-starved."
after max's first scare, she knew to laugh it off, but ben's terror was a lot more than her own had risen to, which made her laugh even more. it was a little cute, how he seemed so frail after you took away his city streets and sunlight, and tossed him into a house he didn't know with nothing but a cell phone to guide your way. a little silly, but definitely cute. "i'm sure it was just my imagination," she tried to reassure the both of them through the last of her laugh. "but i'm glad you didn't actually have a heart attack. i don't think i could've hauled you out of here by myself, and that'd be a really depressing way to end the carnival." max blinked from the sudden shine of his cell phone, but she was grateful that they at least had something to help guide their way. she knew they'd find a flash light of sorts if they looked hard enough, so hopefully he wouldn't have to drain his cell phone just for their haunted house adventure.
after taking his hand again, max gave it a reassuring squeeze, almost like she was trying to tell him that she was still there for him through this. it wasn't that big of a deal, considering it was all fake and made just for the scares, but she still felt better with ben at her side, as opposed to behind or in front of her. allowing ben to lead was something that made her feel a little better, too, even though it'd been her idea to start in the haunted house rather than go on the normal rides, or see the other attractions first. however, when he jumped, max was too caught up in joining his fear to realize she'd crossed the hallway with him in an attempt to get away from whatever had startled him. this time she held her laughter, though, and just took in a deep breath to try and keep herself calm. squinting through the darkness, her eyes only capable of adjusting so much with the flash of ben's phone, she did a double-check around them to make sure they were by themselves again. by the time she was settling in reassuring herself that they were fine, ben was moving again, and she had to pick up her pace in order to keep up with the fleeing man.
at the sight of the darkness below them, max's eyes widened a bit, her eyebrows lifting to her hairline. "that's.. really scary-dark." she said in agreement, slowly glancing back up to ben's face after he offered to let her go first. inhaling deeply, she tried to hold back the slightly weary expression from her face. it almost seemed like this was all backwards. wasn't it supposed to be the guy going in first to make sure there was nothing under the stairs to grab your ankle? she was just about to take the phone from him, considering she didn't really feel like actually hurting herself, when she caught a glint of something from the corner of her eye. glancing towards the object, she reached towards the ledge on the right side of the stairs and felt a metallic, circular item. lifting it, she grinned wildly and showed the flash light to ben. "see?" feeling around, she tried to locate the button that turned the light on. when she finally found it, she pushed it in, almost releasing a cry of joy when it actually lit up, brightening the stairwell to the bottom of the basement. "i think you can put your phone away now."
aiming the flash light down, max slowly started to ease down the steps, her free hand grasping onto the railing. she took each step slow, wanting to make sure that she didn't rush into the overwhelming feeling of danger. it had her skin crawling already, and she was only halfway down the steps. for the last few, max tried to remind herself that she didn't want to seem like a chicken in front of him. after all, what was less desirable? making her way to the bottom, she pressed her back against the wall and turned the light so he could see for the rest of his way down. once they were together again, she firmly took his hand, leading him towards the only way that wasn't blocked off. the narrow passage cluttered with doors along the way was more than nerve-racking, and the longer that they stepped down the hallway in silence, the more max's stomach started to turn, and her gut screamed that they should just turn back.
"am i the only one feeling a little.. watched?" she muttered to ben, almost like she was scared of someone - or something - overhearing. she was going to glance at him to see if he'd heard her, when she saw over her shoulder the sight of two looming eyes. they were almost a fiery red, and although there was nothing else to go with the eyes but the darkness that surrounded the basement, max's heart was already in overdrive, and she was pulling ben away to safety. grabbing the next door handle they grew close to, she shouldered it open and pushed ben hastily inside, slamming it closed with her body afterwards. catching her breath, she lifted the flash light and started to shine it around the room, making sure that they were alone. when nothing came to pop out from being discovered, and the silence took over once her breathing calmed, max started to feel safe again.
easing off the door, she walked over to a suspicious looking bookcase. it was more cliche than an eighty's horror movie bookcase, but max wasn't actually expecting it to do the same thing as a bookcase in a horror movie back then would. so when she raised her hand to pull on the only book that didn't look like it was untouched and left the rot, a bit of a startled gasp eased from the back of her throat when it started to shift, and a doorway was created within the wall. "holy shit," max breathed, shining the light into the secret passage. "i think this is new." looking back over at ben, she gave him an excited smile, beckoning him to take her hand again. "c'mon, scardy cat. i think i hear music." [atrb=style, background-color: 202020;]i keep thinking of spn benax, and how their reactions would be completely opposite to this xD

well i'm sick of this town bringing me down a vast world epidemic all around i'm sick of this town bringing me down a lost generation trying to act profound oh you upper class daughters and working class sons it's hard to save a dollar the world's run
whoever designed this place was a genius. perhaps a bit twisted, but a genius nonetheless. at the moment, ben was finding it very difficult to appreciate the creativity that went into creating the haunted house. he was more preoccupied with wondering which circle of hell that genius had crawled out of. "in that case, i'm just glad you'll be the one i get lost with." for a brief second, the mention of cookies was enough to distract ben. "cookies?" ben had to fight to keep himself from sounding too eager. even in the face of possible death, ben was convinced that cookies would make everything better. however, his focus wavered from the cookies the further into the house they ventured. lucky for ben, the dark did well to hide his embarrassment. ben wasn't even going to try and deny that max was much braver than he was. if he had his way, ben would have been in the nearest corner, hiding until closing time. it was comforting to hear max's laugh, even if it did sound a bit nervous and unsure. they were still capable of joking around which meant the house wasn't too scary. yet. "oh yeah, and i didn't wear my life alert bracelet, that would be a horrible way to die."
even the light from his phone was enough to offer some safety. it was surprising how much a little light could do in a situation like this. once ben felt something brush his neck though, the light was completely useless. it didn't really matter, seeing as how ben was too busy running like a sissy. he didn't even look back to see if max was following him, but the feel of her hand in his was enough reassurance. plus, ben was gripping her hand so tightly, he was surprised she hadn't told him to loosen up. ben didn't even have to laugh at his own reaction before he was faced with the darkness of the basement. it was absolutely horrifying how dark it was. "hoooly crap." when he offered to let her go first, ben was only half-joking, and he was rather surprised that max was ready to lead the way. ben was well-aware that he should have the brave one to head down the stairs first, but the absolutely darkness was enough to jar the small amount of confidence that ben had. he was just about to suggest they find somewhere else to explore when max held up the flashlight. ben didn't even try to hide his sigh of relief. "you are amazing," he grinned and put his phone to sleep, slipping it back into his pocket.
the flashlight offered a better range than his phone, but now they could see the stairs, it all seemed a bit more ominous. as max made her way down the stairs, ben was pressed closely behind her. he didn't want to stray too far from the safety of the light and especially max. by the time they made their way down the stairs, ben felt like anyone in a five-foot radius could hear his heart beating. it was so quiet in the basement that he knew something had to be wrong. swallowing hard, he was hoping that max couldn't feel him shaking. "i've been feeling watched since we walked in this house...but now more than ever," he whispered, afraid of letting his voice get too loud. when she turned, ben could see the look of fear in max's eyes. he was afraid to turn back, but his reaction to glance back got the better of him. immediately, ben regretted his decision to turn. not only did ben catch the gaze of the demon red eyes, but he saw the outline of the devil-like creature. if max hadn't pulled him away, ben would have been frozen to the spot. once they were in the room, ben was practically hiding behind max, trying to remember how to breathe. "what the fuck was that?"
leaning against the door, ben took a breath and closed his eyes for a moment. "i think i miss the cheap scares of a normal haunted house," he laughed nervously and pushed off the door. while max examined the bookcase, ben started looking around the small room. it was rather unimpressive and it seemed like the door they came through was the only exit. "how are we going to-" ben cut off when he heard the shifting grind of the bookcase. "no way. that is the coolest thing i have ever seen. i want one." the idea of a secret passage suddenly had ben far more interested in continuing their adventure. with a weary smile, ben took max's hand again and started down the passage. "i think you're right, i do hear music." watching his step, he brushed away a few fake cobwebs (at least, he hoped they were fake) and started towards the light at the end of the passage. the passage seemed to slope upwards and ben guessed that they were back somewhere on the first floor. either that or it was all a trick and they were still in the basement.
the passage opened up into another room and this one was dimly lit by a few candles. "well. i think i found where the music is coming from," ben furrowed his eyebrows and pointed to the grand piano in the room. there was no one seated at the piano, yet it seemed to be playing itself. the eerie flickering of the candles did nothing to help the shudder that ran up his spine. slowly stepping into the room, it suddenly felt like the temperature of the room had dropped several degrees. "did it just get colder in here?"

"you okay?" she asked, mainly just wanting to make sure that ben's chest wasn't killing him from breathing too hard. not to mention, out of the both of them, it wasn't that hard to spot out the fact that he was a lot more scared than she was. she'd never admit that she could tell, of course, because ben's ego was one of the best things in the world, but that didn't change the fact that his every reaction was ten times funnier because of it.
the bookshelf had made max forget all about the glowing red gaze that they had just barely been able to get away from, and she felt her blood pump with adrenaline rather than fear. she'd never experienced things like passages while in the house before; either she'd just never explored thoroughly enough, or they had installed it recently. either way, she was more than interested to see what was on the other side of the passage, riddled with cobwebs or not. "i don't think your landlord would be willing to install that for you, benny," she replied with a grin, looking back over her shoulder at him. shining the flashlight into the opening, she made a bit of a frowny face at how narrow the walls were, but she knew that it couldn't have been a long passage. it'd only be a tight squeeze for a few moments, and then it'd all be over.
once his hand was in hers, max started into the passage, holding the flash light a bit raised over her head to give them more of the light's usage. that, and she wanted to make sure that there weren't any dark scary turns that anything could be waiting to pop out at them in. as they exited into another room, max took a quick glance behind them to make sure that they weren't being followed, and to inspect the slope of the floor. it was hard to tell whether they were still in the basement or not, but as she examined the room, she kind of figured that they were at least on the main level of the house, considering the large window that took up the entire wall space not too far from the playing piano. swallowing, she let her eyes wander over the boards that were nailed over the entire window, and she silently wondered how big of a ladder they would've needed to cover up such a large window.
she'd been about to respond to his remark about the music when max felt the temperature grow colder as well. a shudder pulsed over her body, and she couldn't help but cringe at the feel of the hair on the back of her neck starting to stand on end. swallowing once again, she turned to close the passage, swinging the bit of wall that had been redesigned with hinges so that any drafts coming up from the darkness would cease. and, of course, it was to make sure that if anything was following them, that it'd be a little less to getting to them. "okay. okay. we're gonna be fine." she tried to give ben a reassuring smile, but as soon as it started to pull at the corner's of her lips, the candles that'd been flickering wildly went out at the same time.
max instantly freezed, and she gripped ben's hand as hard as she could, almost paralysed. lifting the flashlight, she cautiously started to scan the room with the light, not sure if she wanted to find out what was in there with them. she'd started to calm down, and was about to suggest that they move on to the next area, when the piano's playing went from its eerie soft tones, to chaotic, loud, and overpowering. instantly max's knees almost buckled out from underneath her, and if she hadn't taken off into a sprint, pulling ben along with her, she probably would've ended up falling over herself from being startled. they were about to reach the doorway when the door that'd been partially open, slammed closed almost as soon as they'd reached it. "fuck!" pressing her back to the door, she looked up at ben, and without thinking, she passed the flashlight off to him. "you man the flash light. i need to focus on not peeing my pants." she was joking, obviously, but it didn't change the fact that her holding the flash light had only indicated how shaky she was at the moment.
the piano went another moment or so, its deeper keys being bashed down, almost like an angry musician was trying to take out his frustration on the instrument. after its last stroke, however, the piano stopped altogether, leaving nothing but the eerie ring of what it'd been stressed to play. entwining her fingers with ben's, she raised her free hand to try and find the door handle. when she didn't feel it, max glanced down to the door behind them, and her eyebrows instantly pinched together in disbelief. "oh, no way.. there's no door handle." shooting her attention to ben, she inhaled a deep breath to try and keep herself calm. "there's gotta be another way out. another passage, or something. do you see anything?" she asked, nodding towards the opposite wall that their original passage was located.
the longer the piano remained silent, the more max's fear started to boil. without thinking, she started to hum a nursery song she couldn't quite remember all the way through, but it didn't matter that it was just a loop- it was better than the silence that suffocated the air around them. [atrb=style, background-color: 202020;]max's starting to become a chickenn. ben might have to save her again~ xD

well i'm sick of this town bringing me down a vast world epidemic all around i'm sick of this town bringing me down a lost generation trying to act profound oh you upper class daughters and working class sons it's hard to save a dollar the world's run
slender man. in a situation like this, that was one of the last things ben wanted to think of. however, ben was great at running away. the only exercise ben got was running around on stage and the occasional morning run. needless to say, if necessary, he was ready to run. when max asked if he was okay, ben could only respond with a forced smile and a quick nod. trying to pretend like he wasn't scared had stopped working pretty quickly and ben was rather glad that max hadn't commented on it. the bookshelf made him temporarily forget what a coward he was. unfortunately, max was right and ben made a face, disappointed that he wouldn't have one in his apartment. whenever ben owned his own house though, he made a mental note to include a bookcase like that in the floorplan. and while he was at it, a moat couldn't hurt.
as they made their way through the passage, ben was glad that there weren't any sudden turns or surprises popping out at them. it was nearly impossible (at least, for ben) to tell where in the house they were. ben stayed close to max as they explored the room. while nothing had jumped out at them in the passage, ben wasn't about to let his guard down. the room was poorly lit and there was no telling what was waiting for them in the shadows. it didn't help that each time the candles flickered too quickly, ben found himself cringing. he just wanted to find an exit and leave the room. the faster they could get out of the place, the less of a blow his ego would take. right now, his pride was still salvageable. when the temperature dropped though, ben wasn't sure if the shudder was his from the sudden cold or the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.
strangely enough, the first thing on the front of his mind was his intense craving for a cigarette. he was tempted to reach in his pocket to find the slightly crushed box of cigarettes. ben did doubt his ability to hold a cigarette and run though. with his luck, ben probably would have ended up burning the entire place down. swallowing hard, he ran his thumb over the back of max's hand to reassure himself that she was still there. his breath caught in his throat when the candle lights began to flicker. ben glanced towards the closed passage they had come through and then towards the only door in the room. he was just about to head for the door when the haunting melody became a riot of discordant sounds. the small room allowed the harsh sounds to echo and ben instinctively brought his free hand to cover his ear. he was getting ready to head towards the door, but max was already several steps ahead of him.
there was a sense of dread when the door slammed closed. even if they could get through the door, there was no telling who or what had closed the door in the first place. still, it would have been better than this room. leaving max to deal with door, ben grabbed the flashlight and turned so he could keep an eye on the rest of the room. for a split second after the piano stopped, ben was glad that he didn't have to be subjected to the horrible sound, but the silence was far worse. the ending notes still reverberated in the silence. there were no signs of movement. everything seemed...dead. after a few seconds passed and the door still hadn't opened, ben turned back to see what was wrong. he turned the light towards where the door handle should have been and clenched his jaw. there was no way they were going back down to the basement and it seemed like their only exit was blocked.
"you have got to be kidding me," he sighed and glanced around. "maybe i can kick it down?" it was more of a joke than a suggestion, but if they couldn't find another way out, ben was going to try. however, the door looked sturdy enough to fend off any type of kick, especially one from ben. any attempts to kick down the door would probably result in embarrassment, injury, or a combination of the two. before it could come down to that, it was worth looking for an alternative exit. keeping his back against the wall, ben shuffled away from the door and kept the light on the darker parts of the room. in his search for an exit, he didn't even realize that he had started singing under his breath to the tune. ben wasn't exactly sure where he had heard the tune or how he even knew the lyrics, but it was keeping him somewhat calm. unfortunately, he was too busy searching around the room to watch where he was going.
ben had been completely oblivious to the decorations in the room until his head connected sharply with a metallic object. there was a dull thud and a rattling sound as ben pulled away. "owwww," ben whined as he turned the light to see what he had hit. the object his head was an elaborate iron fixture meant to hold a candle. however, there was no candle and the odd placement of the candle holder was probably why ben hadn't seen it. "who the hell puts something like that there? bastards," he grumbled and turned back towards the room. "do you see any-wait a second." for once, his hard head had managed to do some good and ben remembered the strange rattling noise when he hit the fixture. "can you hold this?" ben handed the flashlight to max and raised his hand to grab the candle holder. shaking it slightly, he realized how loose the holder was.
"this is ridiculous," he muttered. tightening his grip on the holder, ben pulled down. the entire thing shifted like a lever and there was a soft click. for a second, nothing happened. ben was just about to comment on how anticlimactic it all was, when the door suddenly swung open. it hit the wall with a loud bang and ben yelped in surprise. this time, he wasn't offering to let max go first. the elaborate contraption had him rather curious about what lay ahead. carefully stepping around her, ben made his way towards the door. the light from the open door was much brighter than the room they were in. it took a second for his eyes to adjust as he stepped through. the door had led into a small bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bath. however, the only thing that had ben's attention was what was in the bathtub.
though it was partially submerged in some type of liquid, ben could clearly make out the outline of a body. the head was turned away from them, but that didn't make the scene any less chilling. "fuck me," he breathed, careful to sidestep away from the bathtub. "if that thing moves, we're sticking to dinner and a movie for our next date."
